Arthritis | What is causing your lower back pain?
This is a replay of the live broadcast with Todd Wegerski D.C., chiropractor in Cary NC
Arthritis is a leading cause of disability in the U.S.. It affects more that 1 in 5 adults, and more than $100 billion is spent annually in either treatment or lost worker productivity. It is the cause of more than 1 million hospitalizations and 45 million out patients annually. From the cost and number of trips to the doctors, it places a tremendous burden on the US economy and healthcare system.
Arthritis
Arthritis is a general term for any form of joint inflammation. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, but the most common form is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is damage to the cartilage that covers the bone inside of a joint. There are several risk factors for osteoarthritis. Not long ago, there wasn’t thought to be a genetic link, but now its found to run in families. Another risk factor is obviously age, the older we get the more exposure of our joints to injuries. Some are from prior joint injuries such as sports or falls, others are from repetitive tasks that just accumulate damage over time. For an interesting look at the effects of doing a task repetitively, look up images of Keith Richards hands. The man has been playing the guitar for more than 60 years. His fingers are loaded with arthritis and take more turns than a country road!
In this episode we discuss John, who spent 30 years on the police force, with walking a beat or working traffic patrol in a squad car. I’ve seen him off and on for over 10 years now. His lower back is loaded with arthritis. Every so often he does something strange and his lower back will lock up on him. This time around he painted a room while sitting in a chair! Take a look to see how we progressed his treatment to get him over his low back pain episode.
